Newborn tossed out of window doing fine, doctors say

Posted: 07/28/2010
Reisterstown, MD - It defies the odds.
A baby born in an upstairs bathroom in relatively unsanitary conditions... by a mother alone.
The cord wasn't cut right.
The child was placed in a cold plastic bag and tossed 12 feet out of a window and into some bushes.
A recipe for a tragedy.... but there are miracles still left in the world.
"There was not a scratch not a bruise no lacerations no nothing no fractures on this baby I was just overwhelmed with relief a big sense of exhilaration that the baby was fine a beautiful little girl this innocent baby was fine.” Says Doctor Olachi Mezu who was the pediatrician who first examined the baby when she and her mother were brought in.
Considering the circumstances surrounding her birth, the eight pound seven ounce baby girl is amazing doctors at Greater Baltimore Medical center.
They can only tell us that the girl and her mother are recovering and the baby remains in protective custody.
She did say the mother was very concerned about her child and her welfare.
Everyone feared the worse but found something extraordinary.
"To look at this baby and realize that nothing happened her she was intact it defies all medical logic I'd say god was merciful and not just this baby and this mother god was there to save this baby....sighs...and we're just so thankful" Doctor Mezu says.
Doctor Mezu says this case should be a reminder to people that there is another way.
Maryland's safe haven law allows for families bring the baby to a hospital, a fire station, a police station so that the child can be given to proper authorities.
Meantime, the baby girl is doing so well she may be released today to protective services.
As for the mother no word yet if any charges will be filed.
