Police say the mother of a newborn delivered the baby then put the infant in a trash bag and threw her out of a second-story window. Mike Schuh has learned the mother did not know she was pregnant.
There aren't many worse ways to begin your life. On Thursday, a 21-year-old woman gave birth in a Reisterstown bathroom upstairs in her mother's house.
"And had placed the baby in a plastic bag and thrown it out the window," said Lt. Robert McCullough, Baltimore County Police.
After a 10-15 foot fall, the trash bag with the newborn girl landed in some bushes. Police say the bathroom was covered in blood.
Mother and daughter were brought to GBMC. A pediatrician heard what happened and expected the worst.
"Not a scratch, not a bruise, no laceration, nothing, no fracture on this baby. And I was just overwhelmed with relief, a big sense of exhilaration and joy that the baby was fine. This beautiful little girl, this innocent baby was fine," said Dr. Olachi Mezu-Ndubuisi, GBMC pediatrician.
In fact, those working at the hospital nicknamed the child "Baby Miracle."
"It's a miracle. I don't have a medical explanation. This defies all medical explanation," said Mezu-Ndubuisi.
The baby's umbilical chord wasn't clamped and cut as is the norm, but ripped apart. Doctors say both the baby and the mother could have bled to death.
When asked, the doctor couldn't get into details about the mother other than to say she wasn't hurt physically but was suffering emotionally, and she did not know she was pregnant.
What happened has warmed the hearts of hospital staff. They call the infant a pure spirit, and they look elsewhere for explanations.
"To look at this baby and to realize nothing happened to her, she was attacked, no bone broken, it defies all medical logic. I say God was merciful not just this baby, but the mother. God was there to save this baby," said Mezu-Ndubuisi.
In fact, Baby Miracle is doing so well, she was discharged Wednesday afternoon to the Department of Social Services who will find a foster family until this whole matter winds its way through the courts.
Police have turned the investigation over to county prosecutors. Sources say the mother is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
